My Best Man
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
I found this book to be totally rivetting. Although it got a bit wordy at times, I followed the storyline throughout the novel. I could not put the book down and read the whole thing within 24 hours. This was 4 years ago.
I just reread the book this past week and found it even more enjoyable. Details, thoughts and some fellings escaped me the first time around. I REALLY couldn't put it down! This time, I actually visualized every character and situation. A screenplay of this would probably ruin it for me. Everything has become so vivid. I only wish that I could picture "Winston" in his later years.
I compare andy Schell's writing talent to that of another favorite writer - David Sadaris. They both have a wit and a way with words that enwrap you in the moment or situation, without you realizing that they are doing it.
My hat's off to Andy Schell for taking this brave move and look forward to MANY more books!

All Ya' Need is Love !

MY BEST MAN is a delightful novel, replete with twists and unanticipated turns. The characters are bigger than life, and yet are completely plausible. An underlying theme in the book, despite it's cavalier tone, is that honor and personal integrity still matter. UNTO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE is the constant in the book, and I would submit that the sentiment is the driving force behind Mr. Schell's creation. While most assuredly appearing on the surface to be fluff, (particularly because it is such an easy read) turns out to be a meaningful contribution to gay literature and the gay community-at-large. UNTO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE, AND SO IT SHALL FOLLOW, AS NIGHT DOES THE DAY, THOU CAN'ST BE FALSE UNTO ANY OTHER MAN.(sic) That sentiment is a TOTAL TRUTH.

Not worth it...

This was a ridiculously contrived book. The characters are caricatures that do not have the depth of a puddle. The plot devices are so staged they are laughable -- which are the only laughs I got from this book.

THE BEST NOVEL EVER.

I came across this book at a clearance sale at a local bookstore and purchased it on impulse. What a payoff! Several of my friends are or were flight attendants for various airlines, mostly based in the South. A native Southerner myself, the descriptions and behaviors of the central characters are dead-on. Harry's treatment during his first visit to the bar in Dallas is painfully accurate. Anyone who has lived in the South for a great deal of time--particularly in one of our urban areas--knows an Amity Stone, the good-time girl with a shady past who may or may not be all that she seems, but who you still want to have a couple of cocktails with.

The plot itself is not incredibly complicated, and the ending a bit contrived, but that's okay. This story is character-driven, and I found myself unwittingly casting a movie-version of the book inside my head. When the book ended, I was sorry to have to say goodbye to the characters I'd gotten to know and love.
