Paperback
Publisher: Alyson Books

Paul, a 50-ish opera queen with a habit of breaking everything he touches and Marc, a young, ditzy dancer and circuit boy, are an odd pairing as friends. As detectives, however, they are one small step from disaster. Why these two feel the need to investigate the death of Jennifer Burke, a rising opera star is almost a bigger mystery than whether the diva actually was pushed off a cliff. Hot on the trail of clues that lead to all the wrong answers, our energetically inefficient sleuths investigate a sharp-tongued music critic, a way over-the-hill prima donna, and a formidable drag artiste before accidentally stumbling over the truth.

Phillip Scott, a lifelong resident of Sydney, Australia, is the author of two other Marc and Paul mysteries, Gay Resort Murder Shock and Get Over It!

Customer Reviews:

Loved this book!
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
I was hesitant to start this novel because it takes place in Australia. I was afraid that there would be many Sydney references that I wouldn't understand. But it turned out that the novel is a bit like a traveloque--I would like to visit some of the places mentioned. It made me want to see Australia. There was nothing that I didn't understand.

And the novel is uproariously funny and clever! The characters are very brightly drawn and interesting, and the predicaments are realistic as well as fantastic. I am going to read the 2 other novels by Mr. Scott. I have just ordered them from Amazon. Recommend to all!

Madcap adventure
Customer Rating: 3 out of 5
Marc is an accident-prone, middle-aged opera fan living a life of leisure, until his young, frisky friend Paul drags him into solving the supposed murder of an upcoming opera star. Having no experience sleuthing, the duo stumble through the clues, lose evidence along the way, and generally make a nuisance of themselves as they get closer to solving this riddle. Marc encounters a man called Reg and the sparks fly, but is Reg one of the suspects, working undercover, or has Marc finally found the man of his dreams? "One Dead Diva" is a lively mystery set in Australia with secret identities, bumbling would-be detectives, and a whirlwind of outrageous characters.

Funny book; not much of a murder mystery
Customer Rating: 3 out of 5
ONE DEAD DIVA abounds with gay comic one-liners. I found myself cackling aloud, especially near the beginning of the novel. As a murder mystery, though, the novel is lacking in several areas--not enough dead bodies, not enough red herrings, clues, or wrong turns. The author simply lets the murderer reveal himself at the end. It's a light read, rather fun. But the plot doesn't build momentum. I kept putting the book aside every couple of chapters.

Gay Frasier down under.....
Customer Rating: 4 out of 5
Amateur duo - a Tebaldi fan and his slightly vapid bar-hopping friend - set out to solve mysterious death of promising singer. Great dialog provides many chuckles.

An even better sequel: "Gay Resort Murder Shock" , continuing the sleuthing adventures of this book's "heroes" was published by Penguin Australia in early 1998.

Very funny
Customer Rating: 4 out of 5
Funny, fast-paced comedy 'who-dun-it' set in gay Sydney. Occasionally made me laugh out loud. A good beach holiday book.
