It would be hard to imagine a giddier good time than this campy first novel set in the gay meccas of New York and Provincetown, Massachusetts. When Robert, a single "good guy," hears that his wealthy, gorgeous, and sexually voracious friend Michael has finally met the man of his dreams, he can't believe it's true. Michael, after all, is a man whose bathroom towels read "His" and "Next." Despite his doubts and envy, Robert promises to help his friend plan the most sparkling, expensive wedding that Manhattan queerdom has ever seen. Fifteen hundred guests arrive in everything from Armani to complete drag. When it's Max, the chosen one, who leaves Michael at the altar, all hell breaks loose in the quiet world of Robert and his friends. And when Max is later found dead, the suspects seem all too obvious. A very funny mystery, full of pointless and amusing gags, Someone Killed His Boyfriend may be the perfect weekend read, like having a group of loud, clever friends that you can put away on the shelf when they get under your skin. --Regina Marler

Some Fun Moments ~ But Overall, Falls Short !
Customer Rating: 3 out of 5
This piece had some fun moments and actually started off with promise. The first half of the book was most enjoyable; but as Michael, Robert and Monette head off to P-Town to solve the mystery as to who murdered Michael's boyfriend, Max...the story bordered on the ridiculous. Not one of my favorite reads. I don't think I'll read any further titles by this author unless they come highly recommended.

A Comedic Mystery
Customer Rating: 5 out of 5
The first book in a series of gay comic mysteries, Someone Killed His Boyfriend gets off to a very slow start. It is, however, rich in character development as the story unfolds. This is not a book for those who want a high body count, there is 1 murder and it doesn't happen until about half way through the novel. The book introduces Robert a pain looking, struggling ad man, Michael a conceited and wealthy bodybuilder, and Monette--a mystery novel goggling lesbian. The story starts in NYC and proceeds to Conneticuit and then finally Provincetown where the murder takes place. The book is well seated in it's time period with ample polical and topical references which are now only in the short term past. The book is a very entertaining and light read and I reccomend it for people looking for a comical mystery story about gay people.

Terrible, horrible, no good, very bad
Customer Rating: 1 out of 5
This is one of the worst books I have ever read. I thought it would be a good beach read, but was I ever wrong. The characters are cliched gay stereotypes--the hot muscle god who lays everyone he sets eyes on, the pudgy best friend who never gets a piece, the sassy lesbian who's best friends with the pudgy guy but loathes the hot guy. The writing style awful. Stukas rushes through what could be interesting scenes--like when Michael seduces the rookie cop to extrat information from him--and spends multiple paragraphs describing how fabulous the various characters outfits/houses/sex lives are. This awful book makes me appreciate even mediocre writing.

This is Definitely Not a Drag!
Customer Rating: 4 out of 5
This is an extremely funny, smart first mystery--published in 2001-- by Mr. Stukas. There are three main characters here, the rich and spoiled, handsome and very promiscuous Michael-- the towels in his fashionable bathroom are labeled "His" and "Next"-- there there is Robert, his ordinary best friend, an underpaid copywriter, who describes himself as a recovering Catholic, and their lesbian friend Monette. These three set out to find the killer of Michael's "boyfriend" although he doesn't get done in until the novel is well over half over.

There are lots of laughs here, nothing to get upset about, a great way to spend an evening in bed reading, or you can take this one to the beach as well. But amid all these buffed, perfect bodies and endless parties, Mr. Stukas does remind us of one important truth: drag queens-- not the gym bunnies or the leather crowd-- stood up to the police riots at Stonewall. A lesson we should not forget is that these brave "ladies" made it possible for groups like, say, the Log Cabin Republicans to do whatever it is that they do.

Definitely not Chaucer.... thank goddess!!

David Stukas is such a charming man. I met him in passing awhile back. I lavished compliments and accolades upon him and I swear that he blushed. "Someone Killed His Boyfriend", "Going Down For The Count" and "Wearing Black To The White Party" are bestsellers in my bookshop, and they have every right to be. Witty, clever, hilarious and sometimes potty-inducing, it was a cover to cover read for me. Few books capture my interest and I have to say this one never lost it. The dialogue flows so easily that one can almost see a movie version playing out (hint hint). There hasn't been a better trio of detectives since Nancy, George and Bess (well, I guess the name "Nancy" is kind of appropo for thess books :-) Make sure to start from book 1 and go in order. You really don't have to, but Stukas makes quite a few references back in the latter books. I am currently reading the uncorrected proof of the fourth book in the series, "Biceps of Death" (due out September 2004) and I must say, it is just as good as the rest. Keep the series going, David! You're fans want more of Robert, Michael and Monette! Hugs everyone ;-)
