Kansas City, MO — The Kansas City Chiefs have released running back Larry Johnson, according to a press release on the team's website this morning.

Johnson was set to return from suspension after making demeaning comments about Chiefs coach Todd Haley on his Twitter account.  Johnson also used a gay slur responding to comments made my one of his followers on the social network site and in the Chief's locker room.

According to the Chiefs website, in 75 games (55 starts) with Kansas City, Johnson rushed 1,375 times for 5,996 yards (4.4 avg.) with 55 touchdowns. He also had 151 receptions for 1,369 yards (9.1 avg.) with six TDs.  His career with the Chiefs ends with 30 100-yard rushing games and also added two 100-yard receiving games.  He was just 75 yards away from becoming the Chiefs' all-time leading rusher.

Many fans in Kansas City pushed for the Chiefs to drop Johnson before he was able to break the franchise record for rushing. 

Johnson originally entered NFL as the Chiefs first-round selection (27th overall) in the 2003 NFL Draft out of Penn State.

This latest incident was not the first trouble for Johnson. The Kansas City Star reported Johnson was accused of aggravated assault in 2003 and misdemeanor domestic battery for waving a gun at his ex-girlfriend, but the charges were dropped because the running back entered a domestic-violence program. In 2005, Johnson was accused of pushing a woman to the ground at another KC nightspot, but the charges were later dropped.
