Chicago, IL — Thomas Flanagan, also known as drag entertainer Lady Vera Parker, is jailed on two felony counts, one of theft and one of theft by deception as confirmed to ChicagoPride.com by the Circuit Court's Information Office.
The 24-year-old Flanagan, who turns 25 this Wednesday, was booked on Thursday, July 2 and is being held at the Cook County Jail, 2700 S. California Ave., according to County records obtained by ChicagoPride.com. Flanagan is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, July 7 at 9:00 a.m. The hearing will be held at Branch 42, 2452 W. Belmont Ave., Courtroom 2. No information was available on who is representing the defendant.
Flanagan appeared on the Chicago drag scene in 2007 from Provincetown, Massachusetts, according to his performance bio. As Lady Vera Parker, Flanagan has appeared at a number of different drag performances and shows in the area. Most recently Flanagan hosted a night at Spin Nightclub, 800 W Belmont, and appeared on the club's Pride float on June 28. Flanagan's persona of Lady Vera Parker also received a 2008 "Best Local Female Impersonator" Pressie Award from the Chicago Free Press.
Although the precise details and facts of the case are not known, the Illinois Statute defines "theft by deception" when "a person commits the offense of online theft by deception when he or she uses the Internet to purchase or attempt to purchase property from a seller with a mode of payment that he or she knows is fictitious, stolen, or lacking the consent of the valid account holder." Penalties range from probation to 30 years in prison.
Rumors since Flanagan's arrest have been spreading in Boystown and according to popular drag entertainer Teri Yaki, the community is "hysterical". She added, "I'm happy to see [Lady Vera Parker] got what she deserved."
Multiple posts speculating the reasons for Flanagan's arrest have appeared on Internet blogs and Web sites including the FeastofFun.net. Teri Yaki is slated to tape a show about Flanagan's arrest with the Feast of Fun today.
Other Internet posts related to Flanagan and an alleged scam for money have drawn the interest of the Chicago Police Department with a posting from Detective Simpson requesting anyone with information to contact Chicago Police at 312-744.8200.

I first met Thomas when he was a student at the University of Chicago, long before Lady Vera transformed his persona. I by no means will attempt to justify his behavior over the last few years, but I am also not willing to give up on him as an individual. Like so many of us do when we are planted in this environment, Thomas lost himself to an illusion of a lifestyle that does not exist. Because of his poor choices, he hurt many people. However, none of us are without problems, and it is always easier to judge someone than to try and walk in their shoes. It is my sincere hope that this chapter of Thomas's life serves as a wakeup call to him. It is never too late to change course in life, and perhaps this lesson will help guide him to a better path, and to become a better person. When and if that happens, he will once again have a friend in me.

Then you must be an IDIOT! Someone like this deserves to be shunned! For what he's done to all these people, for all the nasty things he did to me and other people in this community.....I hope he rots in his cell!

I have tried over my life here in Chicago [and when I lived out west (Seattle)] to help when people are in need. To give second and third chances. To open up my home to people who needed a place to stay... money , clothes what ever... but Im sorry to say from my experiences 'Leopards do not change their strips'.. but in all fairness maybe, maybe not a second chance is in order. Our community can be forgiving or a vengeful bitch. She has hurt alot of people on her way 'up' and alot of toes were stepped on. She has made her bed and now has to lay in it.

I must second the comments left by "thepetro". I met Thomas right around the time "thepetro" did.
I will also add that I am extremely disappointed at how the gay community is always the first to throw stones at it's own people. Negativity breeds negativity and while someone's actions may have been very inappropriate I refuse to judge them and refuse to take part in any type of negative behavior. Calling names, lashing out, saying the nasty things that have been said here only speaks volumes about the individual saying them. This is exactly the type of immature behavior that isn't conducive to anyone's life let alone personality. There's something to be said for being a happy, positive individual. Those type of people are well liked, loved, respected and admired.
Again, I am not condoning the horrible actions taken by Thomas however just as "thepetro" stated that when Thomas's life changes for the better ... which I believe has begun now, I will welcome him into my life with open arms.

I agree with the comment by johnnyo, in that the gay community is always the first to throw stones at it's own people. I never understand that. You would think we would be more supportive of each other. I have never met Thomas, or Lady Vera Parker so I can't comment on anything having to do with her trials and tribulations, but I will never understand how the gay community can be so mean to many of its own.

I knew Thomas very well, I worked with him on a few projects that culminated in loss of money and some questionable circumstances. But from all that, I learned more about the person whom he was. Something happened early on in his life that planted the seed of his deceitful nature. He found safety and probably some anonymity in the drag profession, but unfortunately it was his biggest enabler. The constant need to be more, I feel, caused him to find ways to do it. Ways that, as we all see, weren't at all right.
To see everyone on here go crazy with anger and hatred, whether justified or not, is really moving away from the situation. Those who are seeking justification, be justified. Those who are wanting vindication, be vindicated. Those who are wanting support for him, support him. Fighting is only making this more about how gay people are more ruthless to each other than any straight person could ever be to the community. Very telling..."give us equal rights, but in our own community...we won't follow them." shame shame shame

More importantly, the following are news stories that were listed AFTER the story about Thomas: Mass. lawsuit challenges federal gay marriage ban; Daley close to appointing homophobic alderman; Wisconsin recognizes gay unions with partner benefits; Powell: Time to review military gay ban.
Where are our priorities??? Lets put our efforts into achieving equality, and leave name calling and hair pulling back in grammar school. Shame on Chicago Pride for making an insignificant drag queen more sensational than our rights and freedoms.

Sure the story is tawdry but I'm OK with that. Vera has a long history on this site and we've been there for her promoting her events or reading her blog. Good times and bad times- if you can't handle both well then I don't know what to tell you, other than I don't recognize all these worms crawling out of the woodwork.

But if anyone knew that something shady was going on and did not contact the authorities, they're guilty of aiding and abetting a fraud. Of course, it's much more fun to gossip behind peoples' backs and stab them a few times and just generally be a bar bitch, isn't it?
But if you knew or suspected and didn't report it -- especially after the news coverage of the fraud on Craigs List -- you're just as guilty as he is.
