Hi Princess Darby,
I am a high school sophomore and have been asked to my first school dance (prom) by a senior. I have never been to a dance before and I am very nervous about what I am going to wear. I have gone dress shopping and have a few styles narrowed down which are all very simple, which I like. Do you have any suggestions on how I can add a spark to my look? Accessories? Shoes? I have been studying what the stars have worn to the Oscars, but I am afraid some of those looks might be too gaudy for a sophomore in high school. Do you have any suggestions??? This is the first time I have seen your website.
Thank you,
In Search of a Sparkle

Dear In Search of a Sparkle,
First prom, first dance, first gown. A magic night to remember. With 7 magical points with my wand, Princess Darby will guide you through the glitz and charm every first time prom gal should have.
The only young starlet that I admire who comes from a warm family and has a style and class of her own is Gwyneth Paltrow.
1. Your gown, simple and charming. Check out Jessica McClintock on Michigan Avenue. Colors this year in sherbert colors or pastels. From Vogue fabrics in Evanston you can whip up a shawl wrap or Bridal netting stole, and look at the patterns on drawstring pouch evening bags.
2. Jewelery? Austrian crystals or pearls. Choker or pendant style with petite chandelier or single dangle earrings. Not too bold or gaudy. Remember your face shape, chin, neck, and ear features should grace them comfortably.
3. Makeup...shimmer with a touch of pastel. Not too heavy on the shadow and lashes. Let's not overlook your dainty fingertips. No rings please, don't detract from yur polished but charming color to compliment your lip color, blush, and gown.
4. Shoes, every Cinderella should wear pumps that compliment her height of her Prince Charming, her length and color of her gown.
5. Hair. If short or worn long, crustal hair clips or petitie flowers in silk would be dreamy. If long, why not in a french twist with a lovely clip on the side?
6. Mad money. Enough to get get you home in a hurry if your carriage and date is disappointing. Your cell phone if you have one with emergency numbers and i.d. in your bag if necessary.
7. A phone number for your parents, an agenda, and your date's parent's number for any emergency.
What a lovely time you both will have. Your first prom, your first gown, your first of many for memories to come. Be safe, be smart. Have a lovely first prom.
Oh, before I forget. What flower are you going to grace your Prince Charming? It should co-ordinate with your color of yur gown and eyes. And, don't forget your pictures!
Princess Darby
