Michael Kearns Performs 20th Anniversary Revival

michael_kearnsWorld AIDS Day is December 1 and to celebrate all that we've achieved in the two decades of tireless efforts for the LGBTQ community and its friends, Victory Gardens "Fresh Squeezed" is hosting of Michael Kearns’s celebrated solo show, "intimacies'" now on its 20th anniversary revival tour.

When Hollywood’s first openly gay actor, Michael Kearns, first performed “intimacies” in Chicago in 1989 it received a very conflicted and controversial reception. A Chicago Reader review of “intimacies” from 1989 said: “All six of Michael Kearns's AIDS-infected characters are the stereotypical dregs of society, full of hatred and self-loathing.”

Kearns now says of his characters in the current version of "intimacies" that they "will be different today than it was 20 years ago, because I have 20 years of new experience to bring to all six of them; 20 years of agony and ecstasy; 20 years of maturation as well as insidious addiction; 20 years of deaths and a few births.”

Michael Kearn's "intimacies" is one night only this Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 7:30pm at Victory Gardens Biograph Theater mainstage, 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago.

Michael's show is the second in a series of performances in Victory Garden's a Queer Theater Spotlight followed later this season by fellow queer icons Charles Busch and Julie Halston (December 7), and Tim Miller and Holly Hughes (March 15-21, 2010).

Lesbian Icon Terry Galloway

Terry Galloway, Fausto Fernós and Marc Felion - photos by Fausto Fernós

Deaf since the age of 10, Terry Galloway grew up to be one of the funniest performers of her generation.

Mean Little Deaf QueerCalling herself a "modern medical accident," Terry's hearing loss, vision problems and childhood hallucinations came as result of an experimental antibiotic given to her mother during the Cold War in Germany. As a 10-year-old self-proclaimed "child freak," she acted out her fury at her circumstances by faking her own drowning at a camp for crippled children.

Since then, she's used writing and performance to reveal her queer identity and her silent, quirky world populated by many unforgettable characters.

In Austin, Texas, Terry co-founded the much loved and long-running comedy show, Esther's Follies which was considered for a run on off Broadway by the producers of Saturday Night Live.

Her new memoir, "Mean Little deaf Queer" recounts some of her life's most horrific and funny moments.

She's in Chicago to kick off "Fresh Squeezed" a series of offbeat performance-based events at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater.

Listen as we talk with Terry about laughing at your disabilities, why embracing failure in your work leads to success and why Hellen Keller is considered an S&M lesbian icon.

* If anyone would like to provide a transcription of this podcast for the hearing impaired we'd happily post it to share with others.

podcast-awards-slug2 Feast of Fun is thrilled to be nominated for two prizes this year in the People's Choice Podcast Awards! We are nominated for Best GLBT podcast and also for the top category of People's Choice. Please vote everyday until Nov 30.

Lesbian Performance Artist

Terry Galloway as the Rat

Lesbian performance artist Terry Galloway is an icon in the performance world. She is modern medical accident as a result of an experimental antibiotic given to her mother which left her deaf and with poor vision. As a 10-year-old self-proclaimed "child freak," she acted out her fury at her boxy hearing aids and Coke-bottle glasses by faking her own drowning at a camp for crippled children. Ever since, Galloway has used theater and performance to defy and transcend her reality, her queer identity, and her silent, quirky world populated by unforgettable characters.

Anger, fear, and the aftermath of a self-loathing childhood are never far from the surface of her perfomance but they are transformed by humor and become the tools of her daring break-out into a world where danger is compounded by being "deaf, weird, and a woman."

Her largely autobiographical, side-splitting funny and shocking, "Out All Night and Lost My Shoes," is one night only this Sunday Nov 15th at 7:30 PM at Victory Gardens Biograph Theater mainstage, 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago.

Terry's show is the first in a series of performances in Victory Garden's "Fresh Squeezed," a Queer Theater Spotlight followed later this season by fellow queer icons Charles Busch and Julie Halston (December 7), and Tim Miller and Holly Hughes (March 15-21, 2010).

Move over Halloween, tell Turkey Day to stuff it! Christmas season is here, the holiday where people from all religions come together to worship the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

But before we dive into the eggnog, the very funny comedian Cameron Esposito joins us to take a last look at our outrageous Halloween Costumes as the Wild Things and go over her hyper-lesbian Battlestar Galatica costume complete with fake tattoos.

Cameron is recording her first comedy album on December 3rd and 4th at the Lincoln Lodge produced by Rooftop Comedy. She's looking for belly busting-laughers, gigglers, snorters, chucklers and cacklers to provide the laugh track- which means she wants you come to see the show. We'll be there so let's get a big table and sit in the back so we won't be tempted to heckle.

If you live in Chicago, be sure to see her tonight at the Center on Halsted along with Bill Cruz and Jessica Halem for Outlaugh.

In the news-
Maine Says No to Marriage Equality but yes to pot. In a disappointing election on Tuesday, voters in Maine overturned a law allowing same-sex couples to wed, dealing another huge setback to the gay marriage movement. Were they too high to tell the difference between "yes" and "no" ballots?

Gays and Christianity

Filmmaker Ky Dickens talks about her new film

Many of the world's religious leaders disagree on a lot of things, but one thing that brings them together is their condemnation of the gays. But why pick on the gays at all? Isn't God all about love anyway?

Today we're talking to filmmaker Ky Dickens about her fascinating new documentary "Fish Out of Water" which details her struggle to come to terms with how religious people view same-sex loving folks.

Ky came out as a lesbian to her friends in college but was met with hostility and religious condemnation. She was encouraged to seek counseling and reparative therapy. Instead, she sought out all the specific references in the Bible to homosexuality and debunked them.

After finding out that the few mentions of homosexuality in the Bible didn't carry much weight when taken into context, Ky wrote a letter to her friend detailing what she found. Her friend not only understood her message but apologized. This powerful moment inspired Ky to reach out to a larger audience with a documentary on what she found out.

Listen as Ky talks about interviewing everyday Americans in truck stops, barbershops and shopping malls about the Bible's take on homosexuality.

Hanging out with Shirley Phelps- is she for real? Who are the good guys fighting the good fight? And why don't more ministers and churches stand up for equality?

Fish out of Water shows this Sunday in Chicago at the Music Box theater as part of Reeling, the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

OMG- Who's the Queen?

So who is the queen behind Olova Debocal on Facebook?

She's gonna call out all the other queens and has already claimed her first victim.

My guess- Monique Marquette or maybe Regina Upright

What do you think?

I got a friend request from this "person" the other day and denied it immediately. If the person doesn't have a HUMAN photo as a main photo (or any other photos whatsoever), I deny it.
Monique Marquette on 11/6/2009
Wow you pathetic little trolls! If Regina and I EVER have anything to say, we say it with our names. Signed sealed delivered! My guess is its Fausto trying to stir up drama!
